Nashville - Our hometown, a city originally known only as the Country Music Capital of the World, has grown exponentially and tourists are flocking to the city from all over the place. Yes, the music is still amazing, but man, the bars, restaurants, and modern vibe is simply explosive! Plus, there is another reason people are heading our way - to get their picture with the city's various murals. We are not kidding, it's a virtual "Instagram Nirvana"! While there are formal "mural tours" available, it is completely possible to skip the fee and do it for free. A self-guided experience within the city's multiple districts showcasing our eclectic street art scene. This is a guide to help you do just that. Oh and we've added tips for where to park, shop, eat, and of course drink near our favorite murals.
We'll start our tour in the 12 South district, an incredible neighborhood in the shadows of Belmont University. Teaming with fashionistas, this strip of fabulous shops, delightful eateries and watering holes all on 12th Avenue...you guessed it: straight South of Nashville. Set out on your mural adventure with one of our favorite spots for coffee, great eats, and excellent people watching: Frothy Monkey (2509 12th Ave S) - if you turn off the main strip you should be able to find free street parking in the surrounding neighborhoods. Once you're parked you'll want to walk behind Frothy Monkey for the "Nashville Looks Good On You" mural. Of course, mingle with the locals as you grab a Monkey Mocha while you're there.
Then, head down 12th to Nashville native, Reese Witherspoon's Draper James (2608 12th Ave S). Only 1 1/2 blocks south of Frothy Monkey (if you're facing Frothy Monkey turn left)...on your way you'll pass Imogene + Willie (2601 12th Ave S), stop in the converted gas station if you're on the hunt for a perfect pair of jeans. Across the street, you can't miss Draper James, a women's boutique, with their signature Columbia blue & white awnings. Go ahead, indulge...dive into the shop for gorgeous handbags and some "sweet tea" served Southern-style. To the right of the store, you'll find Reese's "Columbia Blue & White Stripes" mural on one side and our beloved "I Believe in Nashville" mural on the other side. Snap your pictures & post to your friends!
Next, cross the street and you will see Portland Brew (2605 12th Ave S) as well as White Bison Coffee (2607 12th Ave S). Yup, lots of great places to "refuel". Stop in Portland Brew for "a taste of the Northwest" in a rustic setting. Or try White Bison for a modern vibe and a crafted beverage. Keep heading south one more block until you hit Dallas Ave. On the corner of Dallas Ave. and 12th Ave. S you'll find the "Nashville Peace" mural. Just an amazingly colorful work of art...one of our newest creations, but a fan favorite nonetheless.
If you are hungry, step back across the street to Edley's Bar-B-Que (2706 12th Ave S)...get ready for some authentic southern pulled pork with savory southern veggies, and homemade cornbread. I also love The Filling Station (1118 Halcyon Ave) for craft beers to go.
This is the first edition of our "Hello Nashville", Music City Mural Tour...be on the look-out for Part 2 soon! In the interim feel free to reach out and connect. We would be more than happy to give you many more tips about our great town!
